Washington, D.C. -- Visitors watch a projection of Apollo 11 shining on the National Monument before the start of a short showing of the launch on July 19, 2019. The United States celebrated the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11's mission and the first humans to walk on the moon.
Gladys, Va. — Elizabeth Scott, 92, poses for a portrait in her farm home in Gladys, Va. on Dec. 15, 2019. Originally a tobacco farmer, Mrs. Scott and her husband built their home in 1952. Spanning over 26 acres, the land has been in their family for over a hundred years. While eating a lunch of potato soup, Mrs. Scott remembers when her country roads would turn into mud; “have you ever fell into a ditch on the side of a road?” she jokes in her thick southern accent. With all of her children living throughout Virginia and her husband passing away in 2004, Mrs. Scott fills her time with a quilting group and members from her southern baptist church. “I don’t like to brag,” she says, while mixing her sweet potato pudding. “But I attribute all of my successes to God.”
